Book Review: TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY by Jay Asher

By Katrina David

“You can’t stop the future. You can’t rewind the past. The only way to learn the secret …is to press play.”

Hannah Baker commits suicide and mails out a set of audio tapes explaining the thirteen reasons/people that brought her to that moment. As each tape is played, a new person is brought into the story and their roles in her death become exposed.

I’d heard many raving reviews about this book, prior to purchasing it last night. Yes it is a teen novel, and yes I am 26. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I finished it sometime within the span of the last 24 hours, feeling slight levels of resentment anytime something or someone would disrupt my reading. This story reaffirms that every little thing you do to someone has an effect, sometimes an extremely negative one.

Apparently there is a movie adaptation in the works, set for 2013 and Selena Gomez is signed on to play Hannah. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this.
